Which Chinese app?
There are two Chinese apps which US is considering banning.
- Tiktok: TikTok, also known as Douyin in China. It is a social media platform for creating and sharing 10–15 seconds-long videos of singing, dancing, comedy, and lip-syncing. ByteDance owned this app, a Beijing-based Internet Technology company founded in 2012. If you are familiar with musically, then it is the same app with a different name. In 2017 ByteDance Ltd. acquired Musical.ly Inc. and merged it into TikTok in 2018. At the same time, Musical.ly Inc. changed its name to TikTok Inc., which introduced TikTok to a bigger, worldwide community.
- WeChat: It is an alternative to WhatsApp for Chinese people. It does the same things like sharing pictures, videos and chats. Other than that, It is not just an alternative; it is an essential app for Chinese people; it is their wallet, their source of communication to people in and outside China and. Tencent owned this app, a well known Chinese multinational company.
Because of China’s strict internet censorship, “Great Firewall of China,” WhatsApp is prohibited to use.
Why are Tech Giants interested in TikTok?
Among The “Big Five” or GAFAM, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft, there are some interested in buying TikTok, more specifically Microsoft, which Microsoft confirmed by publicly saying it in their blog post. There were rumors that Apple and Twitter are also involved in it, but Apple denied it, and twitter is still on the buyer’s list.
We have to understand there must be something special about TikTok. That’s why these companies want it.
